About

Sifu Michael Tan 譚聖祐師父 has studied Chinese martial arts for 25 years. Previously, he studied traditional Wushu, Hung Gar, and Tibet Lama styles of kung fu. He began studying under his Sifu Peter Wong in 2006 and was invited to perform the Discipleship Ceremony in 2008.


He has helped his Sifu Peter Wong teach Hung Sing Choy Lee Fut at the Chau Luen Athletic Club in Vancouver and at the Choy Lee Fut Hung Sing Kwoon in Richmond.


Sifu Tan has competed at the local, national, and international levels in forms and full contact fighting. In 2006, as a member of Team Canada, he competed at the Shaolin Temple at the World Traditional Kung Fu Championships where he attained a bronze medal in traditional Nam Kuen. In 2008 and in 2010, he competed at Worlds again, those times representing Choy Lee Fut, and attained double silvers both times. He was the BC Provincial Champion in 2010, competing in empty hand and long weapon forms. In 2017, he competed in a full contact San Shou tournament and won the Gold medal.


In 2022, in recognition of professional career and his volunteer work to promote Chinese culture and the revitalization of Chinatown, Sifu Tan was named by Business in Vancouver to their Top 40 under 40 list.


He is:


  • A member of the Hung Sing Choy Lee Fut Federation of Canada

  • A member of Wushu BC

  • President and Head Instructor at the Chau Luen Athletic Club
